Trying to place DOOM The Dark Ages in the series timeline? Releasing after DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal but bearing the confusing medieval-slanted titling, it can be a little tricky to figure out where the latest entry in the DOOM reboot slots in. It doesn’t help that DOOM lore has always had a certain nebulous quality to it that takes liberties with time jumps, dimensions, and murderous rampages through Hell.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through whether DOOM The Dark Ages is a prequel or not. If you’re about to dive in, make sure to check out our starter tips and tricks, which will walk you through The Dark Ages’ slower, more grounded style that’s a nod to the classic DOOM games from the 90s as we found out when playing for review.
Is DOOM The Dark Ages considered a prequel?
Yes, DOOM The Dark Ages slots in as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. Per the official marketing blurb from Bethesda, it recounts the creation of the DOOM Slayer’s legend and dives into how his unrelenting rage came about. It aims to provide a link between the events at the start of DOOM (2016) where the Slayer is awoken from a long slumber at the UAC facility on Mars.
In DOOM The Dark Ages the Slayer is wielded as a super weapon or sorts directed via a mind-controlling device called the Tether by the Maykrs who, alongside the Night Sentinels of Argent D’Nur, awaken him from a stasis to fight off a demon invasion. Hell and its leader, Prince Ahzrak, are after the Heart of Argent, an artifact of immense power held by the Sentinels. The story tracks both the defence of Argent D’Nur but also how the Heart changes hands, revealing betrayals and plenty of twists and turns.
