The Death Stranding 2 Coffin Board is arguably the most enjoyable vehicle to pilot across the vast deserts and snow-carpeted mountains of Australia. As the name implies, it’s a board shaped like a coffin that rides with all the speed and mobility of a snowboard, letting you not just travel across land at great speed, but also water, tar, and snow.
Much like the Pickup Off-Road and Tri-Cruiser, it’s a vehicle you can fabricate except that it can be crafted at any Delivery Terminal – there’s no need for a Garage like with the other two. It’s technically considered a piece of gear or equipment in that sense. For better or for worse, it doesn’t become available until you’re deep into exploring Australia and connecting the continent to the Chiral Network. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to get the Coffin Board in Death Stranding 2.
How to unlock the Death Stranding 2 Coffin Board
To get the Coffin Board, you’ll need to progress the story to Episode 7 Pod and complete Main Order 29 Recover the Coffin from the Armed Survivalist’s Base at The Mechanic in the northeast of Australia. When you report the Order to The Mechanic and connect the shelter to the Chiral Network, you’ll hit 1 stars connection level and get the Coffin Board blueprint as a reward.
To craft the Coffin Board, visit any facility or shelter with a Delivery Terminal, head to the Fabricate Equipment menu and select the blueprint. Crafting the Coffin Board requires the following materials:
- 260 Metals
- 200 Ceramics
- 30 Chemicals
How to use the Coffin Board in Death Stranding 2
The Coffin Board works like the Tri-Cruiser and Pickup Off-Roader in terms of controls. Approach to the Coffin and tap Square to start riding. Tap Square again to dismount. When you’re not riding it you can attach it to Sam by holding Square and it will follow you around much like a Floating Carrier. Hold Square again to untether it.
There are a few things to keep in mind when using the Coffin Board. First and foremost, the Coffin Board won’t work outside of the Chiral Network so you can only ride it in regions you’ve connected. The Coffin Board is battery-powered, which means you’ll need to charge it using a Generator or resting at a facility/onboard the DHV Magellan like you would any other vehicle. It will also recharge over time via onboard solar panels. It’s also worth noting that when you attach the Coffin Board to Sam, it will consume Chiral Crystals.
Unlike other vehicles, the Coffin Board will go with you when you use Zip-Lines. Like other vehicles, it will fast travel with you when parked inside the DHV Magellan. It can also be used to dispose of bodies and hide from enemies. There’s also a little secret tied to the Coffin Board. After completing the story, head to the front of any major facility (East Fort Knot (F4) for example), tether the board to Sam, rest, and fall asleep to experience an unsettling nightmare. The less said the better but you’re in for some prime Kojima weirdness.
