Who is Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3? A Ranger joining in from earlier Baldur’s Gate titles, Minsc is a formidable companion. He quickly gained the admiration of fans thanks to his pet hamster companion. Turned into a stone statue, he’s still alive after the events of Baldur’s Gate 2.

The game takes place 120 years after the events of Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. It’s a few months after the events of the Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus adventure book. Learn more about this character and his traits with our Baldur’s Gate 3 classes guide. And check out the other Baldur’s Gate 3 companions to know which members you’re drawn to.

Who is Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Minsc is a Human Ranger and a potential companion in Baldur’s Gate 3. Players of the previous games will remember this character and the role he fills in combat. As one of the most popular characters, I’m glad he’s not reduced to one of the NPCs you’d find in RPGs. But since Baldur’s Gate 3 is a turn-based title, expect plenty of surprises in the way he’s utilized in both combat and dialogue. He was rescued by wild magic in a comic set in the same world.

A trailer reveal showed us that he has been captured by cultists. And yet, he apparently feels sorry for them. Expect a rescue mission and choices between what to do with the cultists. Also look out for some neat animal handling checks with his “miniature giant space hamster” Boo. Matt Mercer of Critical Role fame voices this character.

Minsc’s background and inspiration

We currently do not know of Minsc’s background in Baldur’s Gate 3. Considering his past, he might lean towards the Folk Hero or Soldier background. Inspiration lets you reroll dice rolls at crucial narrative moments. Here are some potential background goals for the Folk Hero background in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Unmasking The Truth – Free one of the Hag’s masked thralls.
  • A Timely Rescue – Save Findal from the goblins who kidnapped him.
  • The Most Unfortunate Gnome – Rescue the gnome from his fate at the windmill.
  • Rescued From The Flames – Save whoever you can from Waukeen’s Rest.
  • Liberator – Liberate the enthralled fishermen from the mind flayer.

Minsc’s starting skills and attributes

Minsc is known for being a warrior, one that puts brawn before brains. This means that he might prioritize Strength and Dexterity over Wisdom and Intelligence. Based on previous titles, here’s what Minsc’s ability scores could be:

  • Strength: 18
  • Dexterity: 15
  • Constitution: 15
  • Intelligence: 8
  • Wisdom: 6
  • Charisma: 9

While Minsc previously had a two-handed sword and was proficient in Nature checks, we don’t know what weapon he will pick in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Best Minsc build

We currently don’t have any specifics towards a Minsc build in Baldur’s Gate 3. But as a Ranger, we can pick some potential routes to build towards. Rangers can select a Favored Enemy and gain Natural Explorer right at level 1. Minsc had the ability to berserk in previous games, which sounds like the Barbarian’s Rage ability in Baldur’s Gate 3. Ensnaring Strike and Longstrider are good spell choices at level 2.

At level 3, Minsc should be able to pick a subclass from Hunter, Beast Master, and Gloom Stalker. Being able to use Boo the hamster in combat and stealth would be incredible. And at level 4, he’ll be able to pick from Baldur’s Gate 3 feats. Great Weapon Master has incredible synergy with heavy weapons.

Rangers gain an extra attack at level 5, making them even more deadly in combat. We’ll learn more about Minsc and his build as we head closer to Baldur’s Gate 3 launching out of PC Early Access.

Minsc companion quest guide

We currently don’t know what Minsc’s companion quest is in Baldur’s Gate 3. A trailer implies that he is currently held at a cultist base. Freeing him might start this quest across the Forgotten Realms. It might tie into the original Baldur’s Gate games considering that Boo return.

How to raise Minsc’s approval

We don’t have any information about how to raise Minsc’s approval in Baldur’s Gate 3. Expect heroic acts to play a role here, in addition to treating animals well. He won’t stand for the kind of self-centric choices that Astarion prefers.

How to romance Minsc

While Larian Studios did confirm that you can romance all of your companions, we’re not sure about Minsc just yet. I hope Boo the hamster scurries off in time if we do eventually get word of a romance. Just like the other romances in the game, you’ll need to have a high enough approval rating to romance Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3.

And that’s everything we know about Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3. While a Human might not be the most interesting of Baldur’s Gate 3 races like a Half-elf or Dragonborn, it’s also the most versatile with its boost to ability scores. And here’s our Baldur’s Gate 3 abilities guide if you’re wondering what that means. Fans of the series can learn more about Minsc as we head to the Dungeons & Dragons game’s release window this August.
