Other than a brief playable cameo during the prologue, Yasuke is nowhere to be seen as you explore Isumi Settsu as Naoe in the early hours of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Ubisoft made a big song and dance about the dual protagonist setup, so where is the man?
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to unlock Yasuke and swap characters in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. It involves some story-heavy progress, so we’ll keep this spoiler free by being purposefully vague about the more intricate parts of how Naoe comes to meet Yasuke.
How to unlock Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
To unlock Yasuke, you’ll need to progress the main story, which involves taking out two Onryo targets – Wakasa and Wada Koretake – then travelling to Kyoto in the Yamashiro region. You’re looking at roughly 10-15 hours of playtime depending on how thorough you are with optional side content.
Once you’re in Kyoto, take on and complete the Temple of the Horseman quest, which involves infiltrating the Honnoji Temple. Win the fight at the end of the quest and Yasuke will intervene. Sit through the cut scene, then through another back at the Hideout in Izumi Settsu, and another at Katano Castle. You’ll then gain control of Yasuke and have to fight your way into the castle. Naoe and Yasuke will meet properly.
Sit through another cut scene starring Yasuke then win the fight against the shinobi. You’ll dart back to Katano Castle for another cut scene and one last one at the Hideout for a bit of a ceremony. You’ll then get an on-screen prompt where you can choose to play as either Yasuke or Naoe. Choose Yasuke, though choosing Naoe doesn’t change all that much as you’ll have access to both protagonists from this point onward.
How to swap between Naoe and Yasuke
Once you’ve unlocked Yasuke, you can swap between the two characters in three ways:
- In the Inventory menu – tap pause, head to the Inventory tab, and then hold square on PS5 or F on PC to swap.
- Fast travelling – when you hover over a fast travel point, including unlocked Kakurega, you’ll have the option to fast travel as the character you aren’t currently playing.
- Talk to the character you’re not currently playing at the Hideout – Yasuke typically hangs out at the entrance to the Hiroma, while Naoe is usually inside the Hiroma.
You can freely swap between the two characters at pretty much any time using these three methods, which is useful for situations that favour their unique playstyles.
