Sometimes you just need to take a break away from your PC. RTS games in particular can often become long matches, especially on larger maps. Age of Mythology Retold, like its predecessor, offers players a chance to pause the game. This also functions in multiplayer, though there are a few caveats involved. We’ll explore how to pause the game in both settings and what that entails when playing with others.
Owing to the history of the larger “Age of-” franchise, the key to pause the game is the Pause/Sleep key on your keyboard. You might have never used this key before – it’s usually located above the Page Up (Pg Up) key on the right side of the keyboard. Fortunately, you can also remap the key to something more accessible in the game’s settings.
You can also pause the game in multiplayer by pressing the default Pause key on your keyboard.
If you’re playing the game in single-player, pressing the Esc key to bring up the menu will also pause the game. This can be an easier way to pause if you’re playing by yourself, but note that this won’t work in multiplayer. Speaking of which, let’s explain how pausing works when playing with others.

How does pause work in multiplayer?
You can also pause the game in multiplayer by pressing the default Pause key on your keyboard. However, pressing Esc to open the menu won’t pause the game, so other players will still be able to play and eventually attack you.
If you pause the game during multiplayer, other players can unpause by using the same key. There is no timer involved, so they can immediately unpause and continue playing. Over the years, it has become good etiquette to inform other players that you’re about to pause and tell them for how long. While this won’t guarantee that someone isn’t going to unpause, it’s at least good practice among most well-behaved lobbies.
