The RX 7700 XT will arrive early September. It is the latest graphics card from AMD that is targeted at 1440p gamers. The card is AMD’s take on value-for-money 1440p gameplay. The RX 7900 XT and XTX were released in December 2022. These are the highest-end RX 7000 cards money can buy, with the RX 7900 XTX being the flagship. Should you save big bucks and go for the RX 7700 XT, or are the high-end RX 7900 XT and XTX worth it?
RX 7700 XT vs RX 7900 XT and XTX – architecture
Whenever you’re in the market for a graphics card, make sure to always go through its architecture because it shows how well the GPU is built, how much performance it offers, and how efficient it is compared to the previous generation.
The RX 7700 XT, RX 7900 XT, and RX 7900 XTX are based on the same RDNA 3, which is AMD’s latest architecture. RDNA 3 is a total step up from RDNA 2, bringing massive improvements across the table. For instance, the architecture uses a chiplet GPU design, which is the first in the world. Furthermore, AMD also left behind TSMC’s 7nm process node with RDNA 2 and shifted to the more efficient 5nm process node. Thanks to these improvements, all of these RDNA 3 cards are up to 50% more power efficient than their predecessors. RDNA 3 also brings 2nd Gen Raytracing for improved visuals and AI Acceleration for better FSR performance. Speaking of which, AMD announced new FSR 3 and Hyper-RX features with the RX 7700 XT. FSR 3 is meant to fuse upscaled resolution gameplay with predictive frame generation. As a result, you get both high framerates and upscaled resolutions together. Similarly, Hyper-RX is like a switch to enable Radeon FSR, Anti-Lag+, and Boost all at once.
Since all three cards are using the same architecture, there is no one winner. However, the RX 7900 XT and XTX are more architecturally strong because they pack more performance and can utilize FSR 3 the most.

Glancing over the specifications, it is clear that all three cards pack more performance than the one before it. For instance, the RX 7700 XT has the least specs of the bunch. The only places where it shines are the clock speeds and the TGP. You might think that the higher clock speeds might give it an advantage, but the lack of cores and VRAM make it pale in front of the other two mighty beasts. Nevertheless, the RX 7700 XT is definitely more power efficient, as it’s rated to consume 70W less than the RX 7900 XT and 110W less than the XTX.
A similar story follows as we go over the RX 7900 XT. It is much better than the RX 7700 XT but not as good as the RX 7900 XTX. The XTX variant has more cores, higher clock speeds, and a whopping 24 GB VRAM with 960 GB/s bandwidth. It also consumes the most power with a 355 W TGP. If we just talk about the specifications, then the RX 7900 XTX comes out on top by a huge margin. The card leaves the RX 7700 XT in the dust with literally twice the VRAM.
RX 7700 XT vs RX 7900 XT and XTX – performance
It is integral to go over the performance numbers of these cards to properly understand the difference between them. Since the RX 7700 XT has yet to hit the market, we have not tested it yet, and hence we don’t have its benchmarks. What we do have however, is the HXL’s leaked document on the RX 7700 XT where it shows the Time Spy graphics score is around 17,000 points. This means, if accurate, the Radeon GPU is around 3% faster than the RX 6800. It wouldn’t be far off the GeForce RTX 4070 which has a 5% higher score. Judging by the specifications, the card should have no trouble dealing with 1440p gaming at all. It should also manage its way around 4K gaming with playable FPS.
On the other hand, the RX 7900 XT and XTX have been out for quite some time, and we know how remarkable these cards are. On average, the RX 7900 XT should give you around 220 FPS at 1080p, 180 FPS at 1440p, and somewhere around 110 FPS at 4K. Similarly, on average, the RX 7900 XTX should give you around 250 FPS at 1080p, 210 FPS at 1440p, and 130 FPS at 4K. Please keep in mind that these numbers indicate the average performance and the game-wise FPS can vary.
Going over the performance, there is no doubt that the RX 7900 XTX is the best card to get. It plays 4K games like it’s a walk in the park. With that said, if you just want performance, then the XTX should be your choice.
RX 7700 XT vs RX 7900 XT and XTX – price comparison
Price is another important factor to consider. AMD has listed the RX 7700 XT for just $450. As such, its AIB variants should be similarly priced as well, with high-end premium variants reaching $470.

The RX 7900 XT and XTX were launched at $900 and $1000, respectively. Right now, you can get the RX 7900 XT anywhere from $750 to $850. Similarly, the RX 7900 XTX can be found for as low as $970, with premium variants crossing $1100.

For half the price, the RX 7700 XT is the clear winner in this category, and if budget is your primary concern, then you should opt for this GPU.
RX 7700 XT vs RX 7900 XT and XTX – final word
All things considered, if you are on a budget and want to build a solid 1440p gaming PC, then you should go for the RX 7700 XT. It does not cost nearly as much as the other two GPUs, but it still offers good performance.
However, if budget is not an issue and you want the best there is, then the RX 7900 XTX will satisfy you. The card blows 4K gaming out of the water. Similarly, if you want a good bang for the buck card that isn’t really budget-friendly but is totally worth the price, then you should consider the RX 7900 XT. Whether you go for the RX 7900 XT or XTX, make sure you get the best CPU for it.
