I didn’t play Ghosts. After feeling a bit burnt out on CoD campaigns (I know multiplayer is what all the cool people play, but I’m not one of those people) and then reading the mediocre reviews, it just didn’t excite me. But Advanced Warfare had a completely different feeling around it. The overall message coming from players was that it’s good, really good, so I am currently giving it a rather slow-paced shot.
In shocking news, those people that said it was good are right. It looks gorgeous (although there are times when it looks a bit wonky, mainly when you look at an AI companion trying to walk anywhere), is action packed, and the combat feels engaging enough to carry you along while you take it all in. Good stuff. Will probably never touch multiplayer, though.
Steve Burns, Insufferable Dickhead – PES 2015, PC, GTA 5, PS4
Yeah, I’ve been playing more PES. What of it? I’ve won the treble now, though, so it might be time to move clubs. Or delete the game from my hard drive, before it causes yet more problems. Currently, Steam reckons I’ve been playing it for 40 hours (alongside my PS3 and PS4 playtimes), and my family are starting to worry. (While we’re talking about PES: if you’re just starting Master League, buy Bakkali as soon as possible. You can thank me later.)
As for GTA 5, I’ve been doing the ‘billionaire’ playthrough, leveraging the money earned in the final heist to make tons of cash out of Lester’s assassination side missions. The golf club will be mine. Oh yes.

If you have a PS4 and haven’t yet picked up Battlefield 4’s Premium Edition, get yourself on PlayStation Store and give it a download. For £20-odd it’s a steal, and probably still my favourite multiplayer shooter on the platform thanks to its intense, super-destructive warfare. The later DLC hasn’t yet won me round as much as the earlier packs did, but for the amount of content you’re getting here the Premium Edition really does make for tremendously good value.
And don’t worry about going in as a low-level player against high-level pros. The amount of XP boosts you’ll earn the first time you unpack your Premium Battlepacks mean you’ll be climbing the ranks far quicker than you’d have expected. If you were (understandably) put off by Battlefield 4’s dodgy launch, I’d definitely recommend giving it a go now while it’s on the cheap – even if a couple of unusual bugs do seem to have worked their way into the single-player since…
Brett Phipps, Staff Writer – Geometry Wars 3, PS4
I wasn’t able to commit to playing any story-driven game over Christmas, and it was all because of Geometry Wars 3.
I’ve been playing through adventure mode again on PS4 (having reviewed the Xbox One version) and am once again obsessively chasing hi-scores. It doesn’t help that a friend (arch nemesis?) boasts some of the best scores in the world rankings, meaning I’ve spent upwards of an hour on a single level.
I showed my girlfriend a single level and I think it gave her epilepsy. To those uninitiated, Geometry Wars can be pretty overwhelming, with its vibrant colours, frantic speed and disorientating twists and turns (not to mention my incessant swearing) doing everything they can to make your eyes swap sockets.
Until I feel the need to embark upon the Inquisition, take down a crazed dictator in the heart of the Himalayas or shoot a hooker in the face in first person, Lucid Games’ voxel fireworks show is more than keeping me entertained.
