The trailer for Techland’s upcoming Dead Island – a co-operative zombie romp with a melee focus – launched on the internet yesterday in one almighty cavalcade of hype and attention. Whether you like them or loathe them, CGI trailers are a mainstay of the games industry. In no particular order, here are ten of our current favourites:
Dead Island
Here’s the Dead Island trailer in full. We’re not entirely sure if the game can live up to the trailer itself, but this short video alone has made thousands of people aware of a game they probably didn’t know anything about 24 hours ago.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
After years of dithering in development hell, Square Enix put out this big, bold CGI trailer of Deus Ex: Human Revolution to put the game back on the map. And it worked a treat.
Killzone 2
One of the most controversial trailers of all time, this video of Killzone 2 from 2005 was scrutinised and contested for years. It’s a testament to the PS3’s specifications that the finished game looked almost this good.
World of Warcraft
Or just pretty much any Blizzard trailer ever, to be honest. Take your pick: Diablo II, StarCraft, Warcraft 3. Blizzard put out absolutely sensational CGI trailers, with this as arguably their best.
BioShock Infinite
Irrational Games is so confident of this CG trailer that it used it to announce BioShock Infinite – a sequel to one of the most celebrated games of this generation.
Brink
It’s hard to hype up a multiplayer-focused shooter with CGI footage, but this one for Brink did the job perfectly.
Final Fantasy VIII
Square Enix is particularly good at knocking out CGI trailers to go alongside Final Fantasy games, but this one for FFVIII is its best to date.
DC Universe Online
This trailer (which is also used as the game’s intro movie) is so good we’d like it if they turned it into an actual movie.
Gears of War 2
Microsoft has been putting out some excellent adverts for the last few years, but this one for Gears of War 2 is probably our favourite. Mixing an Alan Seeger poem with CGI footage of the chainsaw-toting epic might not sound too spectacular on paper, but the results speak for themselves.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Following in WoW’s footsteps, BioWare’s The Old Republic trailers have all been absolutely stunning. This one showcases some of the best CGI work we’ve seen and makes the hairs on the back of our neck stand up.
