As surprises go, Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic (FOTOR) was arguably one of the best reveals at the Game Awards 2025. Inspired by the cult classic Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) and led by none other than Casey Hudson, it’s as good as it gets for fans of Star Wars games, promising a mature and player-driven narrative action-RPG.

The game is still in early development at Arcanaut Studios, and the big reveal was only our first look at what’s in store. Nevertheless, there’s quite a bit to glean from this brief look at what has the potential to be a defining entry in the rich pantheon of Star Wars video games. Here’s everything you need to know about Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic.

As of writing, there is no confirmed release window, let alone a release date, for Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic. The game was only just revealed at The Game Awards 2025, and though the trailer is packed with promise, the finish line is still quite a way off for now. Hudson himself has confirmed the game is still in early development.

Speaking conservatively and very speculatively, a 2028 or 2029 release could potentially be on the cards, but we wouldn’t want to commit to anything concrete this early on in the game’s development.

Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic gameplay and story predictions

According to a news bulletin and interview on the official StarWars.com website, you’ll play as a Force user just before the rebirth of the Old Republic. Described as a narrative single-player action role-playing game, it’s being positioned as a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic.

Helming the project is Casey Hudson, whose directorial duties included the much-loved Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. Plenty of pedigree there, and Hudson has put together a new studio, Arcanaut Studios, for the project.

The game is said to mesh “innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and heart-pounding combat” to drop players into an experience anchored in impactful decision-making that will chart your path towards the “light or darkness,” presumably hinting at the two poles of the Force. Beyond this, we know little else about the granular moment-to-moment action that will define Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic, but expect to hear much more as Arcanaut creeps towards releasing the game.

Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic trailers

A lone Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic has been released so far, which you can watch just above. It was released during The Game Awards 2025 ceremony in December 2025 and acts as both an announcement for the game and as a first teaser and cinematic look at the mood and style of Casey Hudson’s return to the much-loved Star Wars IP.

It’s broody stuff, depicting several rain-soaked scenes, steady hands guiding a vessel to an undisclosed planet dotted with snowy peaks and expansive lakes. The ship lands, the thrusters cool, and a caped figure disembarks, joined by what appears to be an automaton and a diminutive figure carrying a long rifle of some sort.

The trio marches towards a towering ruin that juts out from the ground and enters through a small entrance glowing orange. Something sinister stirs in the smoke ahead before we get a close-up of the pilot’s perspiring face. She pulls out her lightsaber, and it cuts to black, revealing the title screen. Thrilling stuff.

As of writing, Lucasfilm Games and Arcanaut Studios have yet to confirm what platforms FOTOR will release on, although the last scene in the announcement trailer notes that the game is in development for PC and consoles.

As such, a PC release is more or less confirmed, while which consoles is vaguer, but we’d be surprised if it didn’t land on at least PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. We’ll have to wait for Lucasfilm to ramp up the marketing machine as development progresses to get a firm answer. Take this as informed speculation until it’s all confirmed.
