Splatoon 2 review round-up

Listen, we know how hard it is, having to look stuff up, so we’ve done the internet searching so you don’t have to. All the top Splatoon 2 reviews, in one place. Starting with the most important, obviously.

VideoGamer — 8/10

Alice was a fan, saying that although Splatoon 2 doesn’t break entirely new ground over its predecessor, and had some connection and matchmaking issues,  it’s still a lot of fun. She also enjoyed the new weapons and new abilities (also enjoys talking about herself in the third person). 

The verdict is that ‘despite imperfections, Splatoon 2 improves on the original, and is a colourful, joyous addition to the Switch.’

Destructoid — 8.5/10

The Destructoid review is similarly positive, saying that ‘Splatoon 2 is one of those sequels where you can pick up instantly where you left off, without a sense of disdain that you just paid $60 for an expansion pack.’ The review also praises the new weapons, but, like Alice, wishes that the co-op Salmon Run mode was more readily available.

GamesRadar — 4/5

We’re building up a pattern here! GamesRadar also enjoyed Splatoon 2, praising the colourful style that draws you in to a ‘mechanically complex shooter’ that has ‘surprising depth to the combat’. While reviewer Samuel Horti had some issues with the matchmaking, and the fact you can’t change your load out between matches (which comes up as an issue for many reviewers) but acknowledges the gripes are ‘minor.’

‘Splatoon 2 doesn’t improve much on the excellent original, but it’s a timely reminder of just how fun it is to throw a bucket of paint at a man with a pointy head until he explodes.’

Gamespot — 8/10

Gamespot’s review says that Splatoon 2 is ‘easy to love’ and ‘consistently a blast to play’, and praises the single player, but also describes the Switch’s voice chat system as ‘Inelegant at best and ridiculous for a modern team-based game’.

Despite this, the conclusion from Kallie Plagge is that ‘if you played a lot of the original, the sequel has enough to keep you coming back, and if you’re new to the game, it’s a fantastic place to jump in.’

Eurogamer — Recommended 

Having done away with scores, Eurogamer hands out either a recommended or nothing at all, and in this case Splatoon 2 is a recommended. ‘Martin Robinson says Splatoon 2 acquits itself well on the Switch’ and that the problems it has are ‘the same gripes existing players of Splatoon will be familiar with.’ 

Like pretty much everyone else, Robinson comes away having enjoyed the game, and says that ‘no other game has ever captured the candy rush of adolescence so well. If this is your first time with Splatoon, you’re in for a serious treat.’

God is a Geek — 8/10

While God is a Geek‘s reviewer Adam Cook notes that newcomers to Splatoon 2 may well be blown away, old Splatoon hands will be disappointed by some features.

All is not lost, though, as Adam writes that ‘Many of the negatives fall away when you’re in the moment, because this is just a good time game. In-motion, Splatoon 2 is stunning’

In fact, tallied up, almost everywhere has given Splatoon 2 in the region of an 8/10, although there are a few higher. Attack of the Fanboy, We Got this Covered, IBTimes UK have all gone for 4.5/5, whilst Nintendo Life has, unsurprisingly, gone for 10/10. There are also some lower, including a 3.5/5 from Twinfinite.

At the time of writing Polygon, IGN and Trusted Reviews are still working on their final reviews. IGN has an in-progress 83, while Polygon a provisional 8 (pending testing the servers at launch).
