With its console launch now live, Phasmophobia developer Kinectic Games is hard at work on new content for the asymmetric horror game. However, despite fan demand, the team isn’t working on crossover content like many of its contemporaries. While, as with anything, the team isn’t ruling out any licensed IP making its way to the game in the future, that’s just not on the cards for now.
In an interview with VideoGamer, Phasmophobia programmer Ben Lavender and marketing manager Asim Tanvir explained that there’s little desire to flood the game with licensed horrors despite the rapid success of games like Dead by Daylight.
No Phasmophobia crossovers anytime soon
Speaking on an upcoming episode of the New VideoGamer Podcast, Tanvir explained that there’s no plans to bring licensed IP to the game anytime soon. For example, players shouldn’t expect characters like The Ghostbusters to debut in the title.
“I think it’s something we’ve seen from the community, whether you look at the Discord, at the Reddit, at the socials, people are talking about it, asking for that kinda stuff,” Tanvir said. “Again, it’s about the demand from the playerbase, the community, for that, and it’s about whether it falls in line with our vision for the game as well.
“We don’t wanna put, for example, the actual Ghostbusters in the game. It just wouldn’t make sense. That’s not the tonal shift we want from our game, right? But then you look at other IP—I’m not gonna name any because I don’t wanna start rumours—but you look at other IPs in the gaming space, in the entertainment space, that probably would make more sense to be in a game like ours.”
While there are internal restrictions on what IP the team would like to add to Phasmophobia given the chance, Kinetic Games are still keen to leave space for crossovers if the time comes. “Never say never”, “watch this space,” Tanvir said, teasing that licensed ghosts or ghost hunters could arrive to the game if the team feels comfortable with it in the future.
“We do have a roadmap to 1.0 and a lot of stuff planned in between, and we have a lot of stuff to announce. We’ll definitely announce it and make a big deal about it [if it happens].”
