- Sony’s PS5 debuted in November 2020, followed by the PS5 Slim in October 2023, and the more-powerful PS5 Pro in September 2024.
- Sony has sold roughly 70 million PS5 consoles.
- The best-selling PS5 game so far is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with almost 11 million copies sold.
- Rumors suggest that the PS5’s successor, the PS6, is set to launch in 2027, but will take two forms: a console and a handheld.
Death Stranding 2
After Hideo Kojima’s controversial departure from Konami in 2015, fans were wondering what he was going to do next. In 2019, we got our answer with Death Stranding, a fantastic game that focused on delivering supplies to isolated areas and reconnecting communities. In 2025, we received the follow-up, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which improved almost everything from the original.
This time, Sam Bridges traverses across Mexico and Australia, reconnecting different settlements while battling bandit groups and supernatural BTs. There are also plenty of Metal Gear references in Death Stranding 2, which we won’t spoil, but this follow-up is a fantastic showcase for the PS5 due to how it looks, how it plays, and how much more fun it is.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Developed by Insomniac Games and released in 2023, Spider-Man 2 is a fantastic follow-up to its 2019 predecessor. This time around, you take control of Miles Morales as well as Peter Parker, who gets taken over by the Venom symbiote partway through the game, introducing brand new gameplay mechanics and a twist in the narrative.
Despite launching on PC in 2024, Spider-Man 2 is a fantastic showcase of how everything feels bigger, faster, and more powerful as you swing through New York. The use of the Dual Sense controller, such as when using the web wings or solving puzzles, is a great touch too. With rumors of a third game coming after Insomniac finishes work on Wolverine, Spider-Man 2 has it all for the webslinger.
Last of Us Part II: Remastered
What do you do when you release a much-anticipated follow-up in the same year the PS5 launches? Release a remastered version that fully leverages the console’s capabilities. That’s exactly what Naughty Dog did with The Last of Us Part II, with improved graphics, features exclusive to the Dual Sense controller, three scrapped levels for players to try, and more besides.
Part II continues the story of Joel and Ellie, raising the stakes and placing them in far more perilous situations than ever before. The game is a homerun in how it controls and tells a story, yet doesn’t get in the way of the moment-to-moment action. It’s a must-own for PS5, as well as Part I Remastered if you’re yet to play The Last of Us.
Gran Turismo 7
Polyphony Digital’s eighth entry in the Gran Turismo series launched in 2022 to an admittedly average reception, and it’s understandable why. With an initial focus on microtransactions, not helped by Polyphony president Kazunori Yamauchi trying to justify the high costs at the time, they eventually scaled back, resulting in a game that no longer requires a huge grind.
Gran Turismo 7 is a prime example of leveraging the capabilities of the PS5. From ray-tracing to short loading times, haptics on the DualSense controller, and a VR mode for the PSVR2 headset, the game has it all. With free updates to this day bringing out new vehicles to drive, it’s one of the best racing games for PS5.
Silent Hill 2 Remake
After years of the series lying dormant, developer Bloober Team revived Silent Hill by remaking its second entry, which received universal acclaim. Originally released in 2001 for the PS2, this remake is faithful to the original, but updates certain aspects for a modern audience, such as the controls, camera, and, obviously, the graphics.
Players control James Sunderland, who finds himself in Silent Hill, looking for his wife. But he finds a town full of monsters, fog, and a story that has multiple endings. Silent Hill 2 Remake is a fantastic effort that faithfully evokes the lonely, fearful feelings players experienced all those years ago. Combined with a great soundtrack that amps up the creep factor, you get a game that makes us wonder how the upcoming Silent Hill 1 Remake will turn out.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
Another title developed by Insomniac Games, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart launched in 2021. It’s the latest installment in the series, which first appeared in 2002. The third-person platformer has players run, jump, and use and improve weapons across huge worlds, but Rift Apart took it one step further.
Taking advantage of the PS5’s fast SSD, players could jump into portals and instantaneously arrive in entirely different worlds with imperceptibly short loading times. This meant plenty of moments where players found themselves in levels that took the series in new directions, while telling a fresh new story that felt fun for new and long-time series fans alike.
God of War: Ragnarok
With God of War first appearing on the PS2 way back in 2005, the series has come a long way. Both God of War and God of War: Ragnarok redefined the gameplay and narrative, elevating them into something even more enjoyable to play, thanks to modern controls, a new Nordic setting, and a gripping story.
In Ragnarok, everything shines on the PS5 thanks to the impressive graphics, level design, and the sections played as Kratos’s son, Atreus. The improvements to the shields were welcomed, as players were now able to parry attacks. Although Ragnarok was an improvement on rather than a reinvention of its 2018 predecessor, it’s a fantastic PS5 game that deserves a whirl on everyone’s PS5.
Astro Bot
Third-person platformers have been a fading genre for years, but 2024’s Astrobot seemingly reinvigorated the genre single-handedly on PS5. Developed by Team Asobi, the game features 90 levels, where players must run, jump, and avoid obstacles to collect a set number of Bots in each stage.
Astrobot has been widely praised, and for good reason, with many drawing comparisons to Super Mario Sunshine. It reminds old players of games like Ape Escape and Crash Bandicoot from previous PlayStation consoles, while also introducing new players to a platformer with plenty of heart and a mechanical depth to match. Astrobot is simply fun to play and takes full advantage of the PS5 and its DualSense controller, making it one of the best PS5 games.
Ghost of Yotei
A sequel to 2020’s Ghosts of Tsushima, Sucker Punch’s 2025 Ghost of Yotei builds on the third-person action of the original. Showcasing various improvements, such as in its swordplay, graphics, and instant-travel to areas across Japan to face the Yōtei Six, the game is a major step up from 2020’s Tsushima in almost every way.
Granted, our review found Ghosts of Yōtei slightly dull in some areas, but the game mostly soars when required, with a sprawling landscape and a narrative that showcases the best attributes of the PS5, only heightened when played on a PS5 Pro. It’s the perfect game for those autumn days when you want to immerse yourself in a story that also lets you drift off to side missions like bamboo-cutting, reminiscent of games like Shenmue.
Demon’s Souls
The remake of 2009’s Demon’s Souls was long-anticipated, and following its release as a PS5 launch title in 2020, it didn’t disappoint. The originator of FromSoftware’s infamous Dark Souls series, Demon’s Souls set the foundation genre with the game, and the remake only highlighted these attributes even more.
Not much is different with the PS5 remake in the gameplay, as developer Bluepoint Games mostly stuck to the wise mantra of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. Instead, Demon’s Souls shines thanks in part to running at a consistent 4K, showcasing the level design and enemies that FromSoftware first designed. Gorgeous and very replayable, Demon’s Souls is a game that should be on every PS5 as standard.
