Splatoon managed to sell more copies than Nintendo had anticipated, CEO Saturo Iwata has revealed.
The game, which launched exclusively on Wii U at the end of May, sold through 1 million units within its first month of launch, and has continued to sell well in the UK ever since, only slipping outside the top 10 for the first time this week.
“Having received high recognition from our consumers for its novelty, this title’s sell-through sales reached 1 million units in less than a month from its release,” Iwata told shareholders at Nintendo’s latest Annual General Meeting. “We feel very grateful for this, since our view was not so optimistic prior to release, for it being a non-series title.”
The multiplayer-focussed new IP sees two teams of players fighting for control over each map, squirting ink along the ground to secure their territory.
The game even managed to leave VideoGamer’s resident fun-hater Steve Burns fairly impressed, scoring it 7/10 in his review.
