Speedball 2 Evolution hits App Store Feb 24

Speedball 2 Evolution for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad will arrive on the App Store on February 24, Tower Studios and Vivid Games have announced. Evolution is an update to one of the classic video games of our generation, and is being handled by Vivid Games – under the guidance of Tower Studios’ Jon Hare (designer of Sensible Soccer).

Fans of the original will be glad to hear that Speedball 2 Evolution includes a soft joypad control scheme, which replicates the controls of early computer versions. An option tilt to move control scheme is also available, although how that will work with a sports game like this remains to be seen. Multiplayer matches can be played via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

“Fans who have been yearning for a modern incarnation of Speedball have only a week longer to wait,” says Jon Hare, the game’s creative director. “But as well as allowing the millions of existing fans to welcome home an old friend, we will also be introducing Speedball to a whole new generation. The game remains as playable as the day it was first launched – and with this being the definitive version for many, many years, we hope it proves itself to be the most popular.”

Speedball 2 includes support for Game Center, features Retina display graphics and 22 achievements.

No price has been announced for Speedball 2 Evolution, but if it’s released at 59p a lot of fans who remember Speedball from back in the day will be very interested. Without a proper controller, a higher price point might put people off trying the touch or tilt controlled sports game.
