George Hotz, the man who famously hacked the iPhone when he was only 17, has released the much publicised PS3 exploit, opening up a new world of development to bedroom coders.
“In the interest of openness, I’ve decided to release the exploit,” said Hotz on his personal blog. “Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organise and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released. I have a life to get back to and can’t keep working on this all day and night.”
He added that the exploit “gives full memory space access and therefore ring 0 access from OtherOS” and is tested to “work with version 2.4.2 only,” but believes it should work on all current versions too.
The PS3 is the last of the current generation of consoles to be hacked. In addition to creating a PS3 homebrew scene, it’s also assumed that the exploit will eventually lead to piracy on the platform.
