Sony had claimed that the PlayStation 3 would be fully backwards compatible with all the software released on both the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation. This claim now appears to be slightly untrue after Sony spokesperson Reiko Sakamoto spoke to the IDG News service.

It’s hard to say the PlayStation 3 will be 100 per cent backwards compatible,” said Sakamoto. “But as we said earlier this year, we aim to make it so as much as possible.

After the hoo hah over backwards compatibility issues with Xbox games on the Xbox 360, how this news will affect consumers’ feelings towards the PlayStation 3 is anyone’s guess. We’ll go out on a limb and predict that the games that won’t work will be minimal, but we doubt this will stop certain internet forums from blowing the problem out of all proportion.
