Archon is at first glance a game that bears a striking resemblance to chess, but there are many features which distinguish the two games – most notable is the way in which pieces are removed from the game.

In Archon, when one piece attempts to take another the removal of the target piece is not automatic. Instead, the two pieces battle head-to-head in a combat arena to determine which piece is removed from the game.

Archon first appeared on the Atari 8-bit computers back in 1983 and was later ported to other systems including the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum and the NES. The new version will combine “the fun and spirit of the original with today’s exciting technology.

More details on the formats on which Archon will appear will be released soon.
