Anybody who knows me knows I could do a whole TED Talk on the redemption arc of No Man’s Sky. As an original Day 1 buyer, seeing how the game has transformed into one of the most important video games of the last ten years has been nothing short of spectacular.
The constant stream of free updates continues to be magicirficent and it is now back again with a new update, this one titled Xeno Arena. After several days of Sean Murray teasing things with nothing but coliseum emojis, we’ve finally got an early look at what’s actually coming.
What to expect from the Xeno Arena update in No Man’s Sky
At the time of writing, full patch notes haven’t gone live yet. However, the in-game splash screen gives a pretty clear picture of what Hello Games is adding this time around. Xeno Arena introduces simulated creature battles, very much in the vein of Pokémon, into the ever-expanding universe. That’s a bit of a curveball eh?
Players will need to explore planets across the galaxy to discover alien creatures, then recruit them as companions. From there, those creatures can be deployed into turn-based battles via Holo-Arena tables scattered throughout space stations.
Here’s the rough shape of the system so far:
- You can challenge other players or NPC aliens to turn-based creature battles
- Different species come with unique strengths, weaknesses, and environmental traits, meaning strategy will matter
- Creatures have their own attacks and abilities, including offensive, defensive, and healing options
- There’s an evolution system, with genetic modifications allowing you to improve and specialise your companions
Assuming this all lands as described, it could end up being a surprisingly deep system. No Man’s Sky already has a near-endless pool of procedurally generated lifeforms, so the potential for variety here is massive. Expect a fair bit of galaxy-hopping as players hunt for the best creatures and experiment with different builds.
There are also early signs, particularly from players who seem to have accessed the update ahead of time, that Holo-Arena tables are already live on some space stations. Interacting with them reportedly brings up a battle interface showing your available creatures, their stats, and move sets, with the option to select a team of three.
Exactly how you capture or recruit these creatures hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s a safe bet it’ll tie into the existing taming and feeding systems introduced in earlier updates.
The full patch notes are expected to drop later today on the official No Man’s Sky site. Historically, Murray tends to post a breakdown and link sometime between mid-afternoon and early evening UK time.
