PUBG has always seemed to want to flirt with the idea of being more than just a battle royale, but with Update 41.1, it’s properly stepping outside its comfort zone. The headline addition here is Xeno Point, a co-op PvE roguelite mode that drops the usual last-man-standing blah blah blah in favour of something a bit more unique.
Set on a thoroughly compromised Miramar, Xeno Point leans hard into cosmic horror. Instead of sniping other players from a bush for 20 minutes and thinking you could join the military, you and your squad push through alien-infested zones, completing missions, eventually taking on a boss charmingly named the Architect. Spoiler. It’s not charming.
It’s structured like a roguelite, so runs are randomized, progression carries over, and you’re constantly tweaking your build through Blue Chip Skills, offense, defense, support, the usual. It looks like fun, to be honest. There’s also a new toy in the Xeno Cannon.
What makes Xeno Point interesting isn’t just that it now exists, but that it feels like the devs may be testing the waters for a broader PUBG ecosystem. Between this and the Event Pass tied to the mode, it’s clear they want players to stick around for more than just the core loop. That’s always the intention, obviously, but there’s even a $100,000 streamer challenge running across Twitch and Kick, which tells you exactly how seriously they’re taking it.
On the crossover front, Update 41.1 continues PUBG’s recent trend of throwing in unexpected guests. This time, it’s Stellar Blade, bringing protagonist EVE and her backside into the game via the Contender System. As you would expect, this is purely cosmetic, but the bundle is pretty comprehensive. EVE’s “Savior of humanity” vibe has been reworked into something more grounded for PUBG, though you’ll still be parachuting into the warzone dressed like you wandered in from a completely different genre.
Meanwhile, aespa is back for another limited-time collaboration. If you missed out on its frying pan skins the first time around, you’ve got another shot between April 22 and April 30.
Outside of the graphical stuff, there are some gameplay tweaks. Destructible terrain has now made its way to Erangel, which could shake up how fights play out in familiar locations. There’s also a new Level 3 Jammer Pack and the ability to call in supply drops using enemy Blue Chips, a small change that could have big tactical implications.
It will be interesting to see if Xeno Point sticks its landing and players just turn off after their curiosity has been sated, but it’s always good to see progression.
