Sony’s State of Play brought us a suspenseful fourth trailer for Resident Evil Requiem, and for all the exciting things it contained, there was one very worrying aspect. Fan favourite Leon Kennedy is infected once again, but this time things could be very grave indeed – and not just for Leon, but for every Raccoon City survivor.
Leon is infected with a disease known as Raccoon City Syndrome, and it’s causing black lines to develop on his skin, which are gradually getting worse. Left untreated, this mysterious illness could be fatal, killing him and any other unfortunate carriers of the lethal infection.
Just how Leon was infected remains a mystery, though it could be connected to his time in Raccoon City, where he was exposed to the T-Virus (but never directly infected). Or Leon and other survivors may have been targeted by the creepy new villain Victor Gideon and infected by him.
Leon may not be the only case
Whatever the case may be, Leon isn’t the only Raccoon City survivor, and chances are, characters like Sherry Birkin are also at risk. We see the back of a woman’s head at the end of the fourth trailer, and this character is widely believed to be a grown-up Sherry.
Sherry was last seen in Resident Evil 6, where it was revealed that, like Leon, she too is now a government agent aiding in the fight against bioterror. If all Raccoon City survivors are impacted by the syndrome, then Sherry could be infected too, explaining why she’s back in Resident Evil Requiem (RE9).
Of course, Grace Ashcroft’s missing mother, Alyssa, is also a Raccoon City survivor from the Resident Evil Outbreak games. This means she, too, could have been infected by the syndrome, and this could be the reason for her disappearance.
Grace’s search for her is part of her mission, and it looks like going back to Raccoon City is the only way she and Leon will find answers – and a potential cure.
Other Racoon City survivors could be at risk from this new infection, including Claire Redfield, Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, Rebecca Chambers, Barry Burton, and Carlos Oliveira. They have all seen the horrors that Umbrella unleashed, and each one of them is a potential carrier for Raccoon City Syndrome.
