During a recent interview with IGN at a hands-on preview event of the upcoming Pokémon spin-off life simulator Pokopiea, chief director Takuto Edagawa revealed its alleged 20-40 hours runtime and teased even more in store for players in its mysteriously abandoned world after the credits roll.
Early previews of the game report how you’ll be growing, chopping, and bubble-beaming to create habitats, encouraging the return of Pokémon and restoring a world where trainers are mysteriously absent.
Edagawa hinted that there is more to this gameplay loop, claiming there will be substantial post-game content and a base game that will gobble up your hours in a similar vein to many other cozy life stimulators.
“For this game, the main motivation for this game is typically not to go to the end roll [credits],” Edagawa begins.
“The whole concept is to create the world with Pokémon and live with the Pokémon. However, as an average, it’ll be about 20 to 40 hours,” he continues. “But it would really depend on how the players play the game.”
Edagawa claims that “There’s more things to experience after the end roll [credits]. So it depends on what you mean by contents.”
“But I believe that players are encouraged to and will be motivated to continue to play the game.”
Explorers of the unknown
This hybrid between Dragon Quest Builders, Minecraft, and Animal Crossing with a Pokémon coating appears just like a cozy life stimulator you’d curl up with to unwind from a hard day. But the strangely barren region and alleged endgame content all suggest there is more than meets the eye.
While the experimental real-time battles of Pokémon Legends Z-A showed some promise, as we noted in our review, “while it’s innovative, it’s not a monumental leap forward.” This has left some fans wishing to see bolder directions from Game Freak.
Despite this, the reported previews for Pokopia and Edagawa’s claims suggest the game will provide an entirely new Pokémon experience thanks to its exploration of the Life Stimulator genre.
This suggests Game Freak are attemting to innovate, and it would suggest some promise from Pokopia not seen since the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series.
It’s fitting, too, as this game will be the first time we have heard Pokémon talk since the Mystery Dungeon and Detective Pikachu spin-off games. While rumors that Fire Red and Leaf Green will return are just as exciting, this mysterious ditto-filled Pokémon life stimulator has us eager to see more.
