According to Tom Warren, senior editor at The Verge (via Kotaku), Microsoft is targeting a summer release for Halo Campaign Evolved. This will be the first Halo ever to release on PS5, and Warren additionally claims that Xbox is concerned about GTA 6, with Microsoft hoping to avoid it as much as possible for the releases of Fable and Gears of War E-Day.

Although there were several leaks beforehand, Halo Campaign Evolved was officially announced during the Halo World Championships in October 2025. The game is a remake of the Halo Combat Evolved campaign from 2001, and Halo Studios creative director Max Szlagor has said the title will launch day one on PS5 in an effort to “reconnect” the Halo community.

While an official release window beyond 2026 hasn’t been confirmed, a summer launch would suggest a release in June, July, or August. This timing would give Microsoft ample room to avoid GTA 6, which is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, though it would still overlap with the start of Take-Two Interactive’s marketing push for the game.

Reporter Rebs Gaming has raised concerns about a summer release window. He claims that “someone who visited the studio in October was told they [Halo Studios] still had a lot of work to do”. Halo Combat Evolved originally launched on November 15, 2001, and Rebs hopes that Microsoft isn’t rushing development simply to avoid GTA 6, rather than aligning the release with the original game’s 25th anniversary.

The remake has faced some controversy, with members of the original development team criticizing changes seen in 13 minutes of gameplay. While the game’s quality and reception remain to be seen, rumors suggest Halo Studios may be planning remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3, potentially depending on Campaign Evolved’s sales performance.

Xbox reportedly worried about GTA 6 beyond Halo Campaign Evolved

Beyond Halo Campaign Evolved, Warren reports that Xbox is also concerned about how the release of GTA 6 could affect Fable and Gears of War E-Day. Fable is a reboot of the classic fairy-tale RPG originally developed by Lionhead Studios, with the developer this time Playground Games, the studio behind Forza Horizon 6. Meanwhile, Gears of War E-Day is a prequel to the original Gears of War, which launched in 2006.

Fable has been officially announced for Autumn 2026 on PS5 day one, whereas Gears of War E-Day is just officially slated for 2026, although Warren claims it is planned for Fall. While Gears of War E-Day has not been announced for PS5, it is likely to arrive on PlayStation in the future, as Gears of War Reloaded launched on PS5 in August 2025 and Microsoft has said it will “try to be more consistent” with its PS5 releases.

An Autumn release for Fable suggests a launch in September, October, or November, while a Fall window for Gears of War E-Day would likely place it in October, November, or December. Releasing in November would likely be catastrophic, as GTA 6 is currently slated for November 19, and it is predicted to be the biggest launch in entertainment history, meaning both video games and movies.

Besides GTA 6, Jason Schreier has suggested Sony is planning to release Marvel’s Wolverine in either September or October, which could also prove a problem for Fable on PS5.

The reported worry from Xbox is understandable, as GTA 6 is a major concern among many developers and publishers. Sucker Punch said its delay from Fall 2025 was a “great day” as it meant they could confidently release Ghost of Yotei in October, while the Arrowhead CEO has said the GTA 6 delay to November 2026 gives Helldivers 2 another “six months of uninterrupted work”.

Beyond Xbox’s reported plans for 2026, the CEO of AMD has recently said that the next Xbox is “progressing well” for a 2027 launch.
