During AMD’s Q4 2025 earnings call on February 3, 2026, AMD CEO Lisa Su revealed that development on the next Xbox is “progressing well” to support a release in 2027. This potential launch window comes amid rumors that the PS6 is “likely” delayed due to soaring RAM prices.
Per VideoCardz, Su said during the earnings call that “development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027”. While this does not guarantee a 2027 release, it does provide a possible release window for the new console.
Although Microsoft’s fiscal year 2026 report revealed that Xbox hardware sales are down 32%, several ambitious reports have been made surrounding the next Xbox system.
Rumors suggest that it will be more comparable to a Windows PC than a traditional console, potentially supporting storefronts such as Steam and the Epic Games Store. This would allow Xbox players to access PlayStation console exclusives that have been ported to PC, including Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and God of War.
Due to its PC-like nature, reliable AMD leaker Kepler 2 believes the price of the next Xbox could be double that of the PS6, estimating a $1,200 price point for the new Xbox compared to $600 for the PS6. In an interview with Mashable in October 2025, Xbox CEO Sarah Bond described the next Xbox’s pricing as “very premium”.
Beyond Kepler 2, Moore’s Law Is Dead has estimated that the next Xbox will cost between $800 and $1,200. The insider accurately leaked details about the PS5 Pro and has previously claimed that the next Xbox will utilize an AMD Magnus APU, which combines the CPU and GPU on a single chip. This APU is allegedly 46% larger than the chip planned for the PS6.
PS6 “likely” delayed beyond 2027 release window for next Xbox
While AMD’s CEO has expressed optimism about a 2027 launch for the next Xbox, rumors have recently surfaced suggesting a delay for the PS6. In late January 2026, CFA senior analyst David Gibson of Sandstone Insight Japan reported that “Sony sees the PS5’s lifecycle extended,” adding that “the release of the PS6 is expected to be later” than previously anticipated.
Neither Sony nor Microsoft has officially announced release windows for their next-generation hardware. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino said in 2025 that the PS6 was “top of mind,” while suggesting it may still be “a few years away”. Meanwhile, Kepler 2 claimed in October 2025 that Sony plans to release the PS6 in 2027 “unless any unexpected delays happen”.
As for why the PS6 could be delayed, Insider Gaming owner Tom Henderson reported in late December 2025 that both the PS6 and the next Xbox could be postponed due to rising RAM prices. Henderson said the video game “industry as a whole is concerned about RAM availability,” adding that Sony and Microsoft may be wary of their ability to mass-produce consoles while maintaining competitive pricing.
Regarding the PS6 itself, Moore’s Law Is Dead has claimed that the console will launch alongside a handheld device and include backward compatibility for PS4 and PS5 games, with no mention of PS3 support. He also stated that the console’s design places a “heavy emphasis on cost constraints and keeping power lower than PS5”.
Meanwhile, reports in September 2024 indicated that AMD secured the contract to develop the PS6 in 2022, with Sony opting not to work with companies such as Intel to ensure backward compatibility with games from previous PlayStation hardware.
If the PS6 is delayed beyond 2027 or even 2028, it could prove beneficial, as the PS5 has yet to reach its full potential. While the PS5 launched in 2020 and has received several standout titles, such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur Expedition 33, many developers have not fully utilized the console’s power, largely due to publishers prioritizing cross-generation releases for both PS4 and PS5.
There is also significant sales potential remaining for the PS5. GTA 6 is expected to be the largest entertainment launch in history when it hopefully releases on November 19, and insider Jason Schreier has claimed that Sony is effectively treating GTA 6 as a PS5-exclusive due to the number of consoles it is expected to sell, since the game is not launching on PC.
