At a time when jobs in the games industry have been put at high risk due to the use of AI, Take Two Interactive, which owns developer Rockstar Games, has made its stance on the technology, and by extension, its use in GTA 6, clear.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that “we’ve actually always been a leader in the space.”

“And right now we have hundreds of pilots and implementations across our company, including within our studios,” he continued.

“We’re already seeing instances where generative AI tools are driving costs and time efficiencies.”

However, Zelnick did offer some caveats regarding AI, too.

“That said, do I think tools by themselves create great entertainment properties? No, there’s no evidence that that’s the case, and it won’t be the case in the future,” offered Zelnick.

“Specifically with regards to GTA 6, Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building,” he added.

“They’re built from the ground up, building by building, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. They’re not procedurally generated; they shouldn’t be. That’s what makes great entertainment.”

Despite the many development studios opting out of using generative AI in their content, the use of AI behind the scenes has still been putting jobs within the games industry at risk.

This is not to mention more pressing concerns that impede the creativity and passion of game developers. Companies such as Ubisoft are placing generative AI at the forefront of their efforts, and Google’s new Project Genie has caused many to raise concerns about its use in the future of game development.

The sentiments shared by Zelnick show promise for the handcrafted quality of the Rockstar’s highly anticipated action-adventure, but we don’t yet know if Take-Two’s efforts to invest in AI for efficiency won’t impact those who have brought the game to life.

While we can be reassured that AI has no place on the streets of GTA 6, there are still ongoing battles being fought around Rockstar.

Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster crime adventure is still the subject of ongoing union-busting allegations, which have heavily impacted those working on the title. As such, games journalists and fans alike must keenly scrutinise Take-Two’s moves on the AI front, lest they exacerbate existing struggles.
