There are three Assassin’s Creed titles we currently know are in development. One is officially codenamed Hexe, the next mainline installment, while the other two are Invictus and the leaked Black Flag remake. Previous leaks have described Invictus as a multiplayer title similar to Fall Guys, and Assassin’s Creed YouTuber and insider J0nathan claims that a Ubisoft developer has told him the development team is “disgusted” working on the project.
J0nathan is a French YouTuber who has been accurate with Assassin’s Creed leaks in the past, such as revealing Ubisoft Sofia’s involvement with Assassin’s Creed Mirage ahead of its official announcement.
The insider’s post about Invictus was written in French, but an English translation has been shared by the GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit. In the translated post, J0nathan reminds his followers that Invictus “will be a kind of ‘Fall Guys’ Assassin’s Creed version, a somewhat ‘funny’ game with Fortnite-like graphics and a series of challenges leading to the coveted Victory Royale”.
J0nathan believes the concept is “terrible” and will “probably flop,” while also claiming that “someone from the development team contacted me to say that even they don’t believe in it and they’re all disgusted to be working on this garbage”.
According to J0nathan, the alleged developer said, “I don’t know a single colleague who likes Invictus,” adding that “only the managers will probably continue to smile and praise this project”. The developer reportedly continued by lambasting the game’s “ridiculous animations, hideous and cartoonish characters, and idiotic sound and visual effects,” before describing “the concept [as] simply appalling” and filled with microtransactions.
It’s important to note that this remains a rumor rather than anything official. Even if accurate, the frustration and words of one developer do not necessarily reflect the feelings of an entire development team.
Invictus and the Future of Assassin’s Creed
Although we haven’t seen any footage of Assassin’s Creed Invictus, the game was first announced in 2022. It is being developed by a team made up of For Honor veterans, the standalone Ubisoft multiplayer title that serves as a competitive melee fighting game featuring warriors from various historical periods, including samurai, Vikings, and knights.
It was previously rumored that Invictus could release in 2025 following a PSN store datamine, but that obviously never materialized. Ubisoft has stated that it wants Assassin’s Creed to become an “annual billionaire brand,” suggesting new releases every year. It’s possible that Invictus could launch this year, followed by the Black Flag remake next year after its delay to fiscal year 2027, but for now, all we can do is wait and see.
While no gameplay has been shown, comparisons to Fall Guys sound bleak. Fall Guys works well as a game-show-style experience where you compete against dozens of others across multiple obstacle-course rounds to reach first place, but it doesn’t scream as a natural fit for Assassin’s Creed.
The concept feels especially odd given that, up until Black Flag in 2013, Assassin’s Creed games featured a unique multiplayer mode in which players hunted one another using mechanics from the single-player campaign, such as blending into crowds and navigating rooftops. If the franchise needed to receive a standalone multiplayer experience, that older mode would have provided a far stronger foundation to build upon.
Beyond Invictus, there are ongoing rumors surrounding a Black Flag remake. The European video game ratings board PEGI has leaked the title as Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, and it allegedly adopts the open-world RPG-style systems seen in newer entries, including leveled weapons and armor similar to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. While the remake has yet to be officially announced, Ubisoft has recently responded to speculation surrounding an alleged Collector’s Edition statue.
Finally, there’s Assassin’s Creed Hexe. This is the next mainline installment after Shadows, and it is rumored to be set in 16th-century Germany during the height of the European witch trials. It is also said to feature a smaller open-world design, more in line with earlier Assassin’s Creed titles before Origins transformed the series into an RPG in 2017, then carried on by Odyssey, Valhalla, and Shadows.
