A new Nintendo Direct focused on Tomodachi Life living the Dream has just revealed the release date for Nintendo’s wacky new life simulator. This comes just a few days after the Super Mario Galaxy Movie Nintendo Direct, and gives us a much deeper dive into what makes it different from its 3DS predecessor.
The direct revealed the April 16 release date for the game and showed off plenty of major features for the game. Set on an empty island, you’ll be gradually populating it with adorable Mii versions of anyone you know and watching them live their lives out in real time, giving it a charming Sims-like quality.
You can now place houses and items a la Animal Crossing to create the town of your dreams and turn the island into the vibrant town of your dreams.
The island is highly customizable compared to the static apartment building and shops of the first game, which left only so much to explore in its 3DS predecessor.
A not-so-deserted Island
Taking notes from Mii-centric RPG Miitopia, the Mii character customization is now robust enough that it allows you to bring to life anybody that you can think of.
But the biggest improvement of this title is the inclusion of same-sex romance options and non-binary characters, a much-needed change from Tomodachi Life on the 3DS.
For a life stimulator that plays like a quirky version of The Sims, the lack of diversity in characters was a huge drawback that put limits on the colourful life stimulator that was otherwise full of personality.
Nintendo previously stated that they will “strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players” in a Tomodachi Life successor (via CBS News). I’m all too happy the developers kept true to that promise.
Tomodachi Life living the Dream releases on April 16, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
However, Nintendo made no mention of a Switch 2-specific edition, suggesting that this charming life stimulator will be the same no matter whether you play it on the Nintendo Switch or its successor.
