Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch on February 27, and one of the most exciting aspects of the game is the return of series veteran Leon Kennedy, who was last seen in Resident Evil 6. Naturally, Leon’s comeback has sparked speculation and hope among fans that Ada Wong may return as well. While unwilling to confirm Ada’s status in Requiem, the game’s director has admitted he is personally interested in the relationship between the iconic duo.
In an interview with Deadline, Resident Evil Requiem director Kōshi Nakanishi was asked whether Leon is speaking to either Claire Redfield or Ada Wong via headset, as seen in early previews. Nakanishi responds by acknowledging that “a lot of fans are interested in similar things,” while also admitting he is “very interested in the private relationship between Leon and Ada”.
As expected, with the game’s release imminent, Nakanishi stops short of commenting on the potential return of either Ada or Claire. However, he at least promises that Capcom has “put a lot of work into Requiem, implementing stories and things that fans will love and enjoy”.
Resident Evil Requiem would be the perfect return for Ada Wong
Although Ada Wong’s return is neither confirmed nor ruled out, Resident Evil Requiem is a perfect opportunity for her to reappear because Ada has always played a significant role in every mainline Resident Evil title starring Leon Kennedy, including Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil 6.
Ada is a Chinese-American spy and mercenary who constantly straddles the line between morally good and bad. Her dynamic with Leon positions them as would-be suitors on opposing sides, similar to the dynamic between Batman and Catwoman.
As for Claire Redfield, her return would also be welcomed, as she has not reappeared since Resident Evil Revelations 2 in 2015. Claire made her debut alongside Leon in the original Resident Evil 2 in 1998, though there has never been a romantic dynamic between the two, aside from a long-running and amusing fan-created meme involving Chris Redfield wanting Leon and Claire to pair up to continue the Redfield bloodline.
Nakanishi has teased the return of more characters beyond Leon, but we will have to wait and see whether Ada or Claire ultimately appear. Ada’s inclusion would make the most sense given her recurring connection with Leon, as well as the fact that she was cut from Resident Evil Village. Claire’s return, meanwhile, could allow Capcom to reintroduce her ahead of the Resident Evil Code Veronica remake rumored to be released in the first half of 2027.
Beyond speculation about potentially returning characters, the game looks excellent. We managed to get our hands on Resident Evil Requiem for a preview, and so far, it is shaping up as an early Game of the Year contender.
In addition to Leon, the game stars newcomer Grace Ashcroft, an FBI analyst and the daughter of Resident Evil Outbreak protagonist Alyssa Ashcroft. The contrast between Grace and Leon creates an experience that blends Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4-style gameplay. There’s also a blend of traditional Resident Evil and new-school, thanks to the option to freely switch between first and third-person gameplay perspectives.
