The Silent Hill games have made a terrific comeback. Titles such as Downpour and Book of Memories marked two of the series’ lowest points in 2012, but the Silent Hill 2 remake in 2024 was incredible, as was Silent Hill f in 2025, selling over one million copies in three days. Unfortunately, while the games have become good again, the movies continue to disappoint, as the new Return to Silent Hill film has suffered an embarrassing Rotten Tomatoes score that is miraculously worse than Silent Hill Revelation.
As of this writing, Return to Silent Hill holds an abysmal 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is worse than the 2006 film’s 33% starring Sean Bean, and even lower than the generous 8% given to Silent Hill Revelation, a movie infamous for its tacky 3D and needless exploitation of the iconic Pyramid Head.

Return to Silent Hill is based on the legendary Silent Hill 2, with James receiving a letter from his deceased partner, Mary, prompting him to investigate the once-familiar town. However, while the Silent Hill 2 remake was an excellent experience that proved skeptics wrong, Return to Silent Hill appears to have done the opposite, reinforcing many of the doubts surrounding the film.
Fortunately, Silent Hill fans have new video games to look forward to over the next few years. A Silent Hill remake is currently in development at Bloober Team, the studio behind the Silent Hill 2 remake, and is reportedly targeting a 2027 release. There’s also Silent Hill Townfall, which we have yet to see anything of despite rumors pointing to a 2026 launch.
The series’ producer has expressed a desire for Silent Hill to become an annual franchise, pushing for a new game every year. In addition to the officially announced Townfall and Silent Hill remake, there are also rumors that Bloober Team is already planning a remake of Silent Hill 3. Meanwhile, the producer has stated that each upcoming entry will feature a unique “flavor” of gameplay.
