GTA 6 Online reportedly includes MMORPG features, according to Rich Vogel, a video game industry veteran who has worked on MMOs such as Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, and New World.
Speaking to publication Wccftech about the future of the MMO genre in the west, Vogel believes a “large audience is waiting for the right MMORPG to emerge… [But] the problem is that no publisher is willing to invest the money and take the risk at this time”. However, Vogel adds, “If what I have been hearing about GTA 6’s features and gameplay is true, it could evolve into an MMORPG, as many of its planned features are typically found in MMORPGs”.
MMORPGs are Massive Multiplayer Online experiences with role-playing elements, such as creating a custom character and developing them over time with skills, abilities, and gear. There are also quests to complete, as well as the ability to chat with other players.
Unfortunately, there’s no elaboration from Vogel concerning which features typical of an MMORPG could appear in GTA 6 Online. MMOs typically contain hundreds to thousands of players within one server, and, although not nearly as big, leaks claim that Rockstar is working on 64-player servers for GTA 6 Online, with an ultimate ambition of 96. This is supported by a patent from Take-Two Interactive in 2021, and either would be an improvement over GTA 5, where servers are limited to 32 players per session.
Regarding role-playing, Rockstar purchased FiveM in August 2023. FiveM is a GTA 5 Online mod that allows players to join custom servers with unique, unofficial features to roleplay. Nopixel is also an extremely popular RP server for GTA Online, and, in September, Rockstar expressed their excitement to “support the nopixel team as they create the future of GTA RP”.
GTA 6 Online rumors
It’s possible that GTA 6 Online could implement role-playing features that have made RP servers so popular. These custom RP servers let players enter the world of Los Santos online and roleplay jobs, including a police officer, journalist, taxi driver, and other professions.
Nopixel servers typically cap at around 200 players, but GTA RP is also hugely popular among streamers, with Twitch CEO, Dan Clancy, revealing that GTA 5 was the most-watched game on Twitch in 2024, with users spending 1.4 billion hours in total watching GTA 5 RP content.
Aside from an MMORPG, there are rumors that GTA 6 Online will be the “next big UGC platform” similar to Fortnite and Roblox. UGC stands for user-generated content, and outlet Digiday reports that three anonymous industry insiders claim Rockstar has been in “discussions with top Roblox and Fortnite creators, as well as dedicated ‘GTA’ content creators, about the potential to create custom experiences” for Online.
Reportedly, “These experiences would allow creators to modify the game’s environment and assets to bring their own intellectual property – and potentially their brand sponsors – into ‘GTA’s’ virtual sandbox”.
Remember that reports concerning GTA 6 Online are just rumors until Rockstar makes official announcements. Unfortunately, we have to wait until November 2026 for GTA 6 to launch, thanks to the game’s latest delay.
A minor animation leak has emerged from a former Rockstar developer, but Rockstar has mostly kept things contained since the flood of in-development gameplay leaks in 2022.
Away from leaks and rumors, publisher Take-Two Interactive says Rockstar is determined to smash the game’s “extraordinary expectations”. Take-Two’s CEO also promises that the game’s value will exceed its price in response to concerns of a $100 price tag.
