The Game Awards is today, and developer Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that Lara Croft will be present, with fans getting a look at the “future” of the Tomb Raider franchise. Before the official Game Awards reveal, alleged screenshots of the new Tomb Raider game have leaked online, and they seem to be pointing towards a remake or reimagining of Lara Croft’s 1996 debut for the PS1.
Screenshots come from ResetEra member NeoRaider, courtesy of the GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit, along with cover art claiming the game is called Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis. It’s not official, and there are accusations saying the cover art looks like AI, but Lara Croft’s pose for the box art does perfectly align with The Game Awards’ Tomb Raider silhouette currently present in Fortnite.
More screenshots have been shared by X user Tarada (Ash)Croft. Again, these screenshots aren’t official, but they’re super low-quality images allegedly from a trailer that will be shown at The Game Awards.
Rumors of a remake/reimagining of the first Tomb Raider originally stem from Tomb Raider news aggregator, Society of Raiders, on X. Assuming we are getting a remake, this would be Crystal Dynamics’ second time retelling the story of Lara Croft’s debut, following in the footsteps of Tomb Raider Anniversary from 2007.
You can watch The Game Awards live on YouTube, Twitch, or Amazon Prime for the first time at 4:30 PM PST/7:30 PM EDT on December 11, as well as 12:30AM GMT on December 12. It is once again hosted by its founder, Geoff Keighley, and since its inception in 2014, the show has been synonymous with massive world premiere game reveals via trailers.
Tomb Raider Game Awards appearance will reveal “More than one thing,” says insider
According to reliable insider Shinobi062 on ResetEra, Tomb Raider’s appearance at The Game Awards will reveal “More than one thing” and fans “won’t be upset”.
Besides rumors of a Tomb Raider remake, there are also rumors claiming Tomb Raider 12 is an open-world experience set in India, starring Lara Croft in her “prime”. Its story reportedly involves Lara racing against a Society of Raiders to collect powerful artifacts, and the only titbit about gameplay is that it features a motorcycle Lara can use to freely explore the open world.
While still unconfirmed, a second remake would make sense as Crystal Dynamics is attempting to “unify” the Tomb Raider timelines, which means combining classic Tomb Raider from the PS1 games by former British developer, Core Design, with the recent Survivor trilogy from Crystal Dynamics: Tomb Raider 2013, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
Other potential announcements include a Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld remaster, seeing as we’ve already been treated to remasters of Tomb Raider 1-3 and 4-6. However, the developers of the remasters say they haven’t received a “request” to remaster the LAU trilogy, plus Tomb Raider Anniversary recently joined PS Plus Premium in November and is selling on the PSN store for $20 alongside Tomb Raider Legend.
It’s also possible we might get a look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, even though the Amazon Prime live-action series isn’t filming until January 2026. Sophie Turner, famous for playing Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, was cast as Miss Croft earlier this year, and she released a statement promising fans that “Lara is in very safe hands”. Story Kitchen, a producer of the show, has also confirmed that future Tomb Raider games will share the same universe as the Amazon Prime series.
