Wargaming, creator of the hugely popular World of Tanks, has announced the acquisition of Chicago-based Day 1 Studios.
The newly formed studio will focus exclusively on the development of an unannounced console title
Day 1 Studios previously created Fracture for LucasArts and FEAR 3 for Warner Bros. Interactive. The studio earlier had a hand in the development of MechAssault, MechAssault 2 and FEAR for Xbox 360 and PS3.
“The move into console game development is a huge step for Wargaming, as we begin to expand our presence into new platforms,” said Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming. “We are looking forward to sharing the fruits of our labour soon.”
“Wargaming is a clear leader in the free-to-play space and helps set the standard on which all other games in the genre strive for,” said Denny Thorley, new Head of Wargaming’s Chicago-based studio. “Our team is extremely excited to start the first console project for Wargaming.”
Back in February 2012 Day 1 Studios announced Reign of Thunder, a free-to-play mech combat title not too far removed from MechAssault.
At the time the studio said: “Mech fans have been asking us for years to return to the genre and we’ve been listening. Reign of Thunder is an all new Mech IP being developed by the people who brought you the award-winning MechAssault series. We’ve been hard at work creating a hard-hitting, fast-paced, explosive action game with all the customisation options you could ever want.”
Whilst free-to-play fits perfectly with Wargaming’s business, this model isn’t widely used on consoles. Either Day 1 is working on something else entirely different, or Wargaming may be attempting to successfully bring a free-to-play mech title to consoles.
