The next regular game in the Resident Evil franchise - presumably Resident Evil 6 - promises to be something entirely new.

Masachika Kawata, producer of squad-based shooter Resident Evil: Raccoon City, told Spanish site MarcaPlayer (via a translation by Rely on Horror): "The series will see a complete renovation with the next entry on every level. But we can't forget about all the previous entries that have led to the creation of many possibilities for the franchise.

"I can't say if we're going to make it survival horror or a shooter, but I can say that it'll be totally new." Analysis

Resident Evil 5 had a mixed reception, with most criticism focussing on its departure from the horror genre and the somewhat archaic control system. We expect the controls to be overhauled in the next game, but whether or not Capcom returns to the franchise's horror roots is anyone's guess.

I don't think it's a simple binary choice between old-style Survival Horror and the newer-style Third-Person Shooter.

Both have merits and drawbacks. Pool the former and address the latter.

Take old-style hub progression and puzzles and make them better. Take newer-style shooting and improve it. Address the wildly different plot threads and tie them together.

Make a game where a combination of plotted mystery, non-contrived puzzles (which feel at home in the setting, instead of jarring with it) and intense action push you back-and-forth across a cohesive and believable hub-based gameworld.

Picture a place with the best bits of Liberty City and Bright Falls. Stick in zombies and more grotesque mutations. Throw your character into the middle of it so they can go anywhere - but point them in the direction of their first plot point, and make surviving elsewhere REALLY difficult.

Then when they get to their waypoint, give them a puzzle to solve, rewarded by bigger weapons, more mystery and two more objectives in opposite ends of the gameworld to tackle in whatever order they wish - gibbing nasties to sludge on the way there.

Then when they get there, send them somewhere else - or back to where they began. Always leading with story, towards a puzzle, and rewarding with new toys used to blow up more stuff for the in-between bits.

Then lump a boss in followed by a big plot twist.

That's the future for Survival Horror.

I hope it's Resident of Duty: Modern Zombies.

Yup, less shooting more puzzling and scary things please! I like learning a singular location, and having it develop over time would be cool.

Hopefully N6 will have biometric feedback and RE6 will use it in interesting ways. Capcom have always been close to Nintendo, so I think it's possible that it would get the best version.

Desperate for more puzzles like the earlier games. Best bit about them tbh ^^

Resi 6 better be a return to survival horror, otherwise I'm out.
