EA has explained the reasons behind its decision not to release the upcoming FIFA World Cup game on Xbox One or PlayStation 4, saying that it wants to "make the best game we can for our largest audience, which is still on 360 & PS3."

In a series of tweets responding to questions from puzzled fans this afternoon, EA Sports said:

"Why isn't our World Cup game on X1/PS4? We are making the best game we can for our largest audience, which is still on 360 & PS3. For fans on X1/PS4, #FIFA14 will have a range of World Cup content and tournaments within FUT. More news closer to the tournament."

EA Sports announced 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil earlier today, revealing that the game is set to launch at retail on April 17, exclusively on Xbox 360 an PlayStation 3.

Its decision to limit the game to Xbox 360 and PS3 comes as a surprise, however, particularly given comments made by EA last week who said that it had experienced a "much sharper decline than anticipated in demand for current-generation software" at the tail-end of last year.

UPDATE: In addition to posting the above tweets, EA Sports has provided VideoGamer.com with a more detailed explanation behind its decision to skip PS4 and Xbox One, posted below.

"EA SPORTS 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil is coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PS3 as a fully featured console game," said EA Sports. "For our fans on the new generation of consoles and playing FIFA 14, we will have a range of engaging content, promotions and tournament within FIFA Ultimate Team so that those fans can experience the World Cup in unique and fun ways.

"When we made the decision we considered a number of factors but most importantly we wanted to create a great game within our development resources that could reach as many people as possible and the way to do that was make our best game yet on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We gave our team the mandate of setting a laser focus on building the highest quality game for X360 and PS3 they could, and that’s exactly what they are doing."

the 'more detailed' explanation just reiterated the same drivel but by using more words.

This is clearly a mix of 1) laziness and 2) a recognition on EA's part that they have nothing at all to show for their time hands on with next-gen consoles and have nothing better than current-gen looking stuff to give us.

No mention whatsoever of the PC of course :/ Oh well maybe for FIFA 2015 they'll bother giving the PC the new engine. I won't hold my breath mind you.
