Battlezone 98 Redux, a remastered version of Activision’s 1998 Battlezone, is to release on PC this spring, Rebellion has announced.

The new game promises to keep “the core rush of first-person action and RTS gameplay” of the original 90s version while mixing it with remastered visuals, online multiplayer and support for Steam Workshop mods.

You can check out what it looks like in the trailer below.

The game isn’t being developed in-house at Rebellion, however. Instead, it’s the first Rebellion title to be developed by an external studio, with development headed up by Los Angeles-based studio Big Boat Interactive, whose staff includes three developers who worked on the original 1998 version.

Rebellion’s internal teams, meanwhile, “continue to work on Battlezone for PlayStation VR, and more unannounced ‘AAA’ titles”, the company says.

Rebellion also confirmed to VideoGamer.com that this isn’t the big reveal teased yesterday, after Sniper Elite 4 was spotted on the LinkedIn profile of an employee at digital arts company ADIA Entertainment. That reveal is still expected at some point over the next few weeks.

A price and exact release date for Battlezone 98 Redux has yet to be announced, but expect to hear more in the run-up to its release this spring.
