Twice as many pre-orders have been placed for Xbox One than they were for Xbox 360 during the run up to the console's launch in 2005, Microsoft has revealed.

Discussing Xbox One's upcoming launch on Xbox Wire, Microsoft thanked fans for their "tremendous interest and support" for the upcoming console, stating that "after 12 weeks on the market, pre-order sales of Xbox One are still trending as double that of Xbox 360 during the same time period.

"As a result of this incredible demand, a limited number of additional Xbox One Day One consoles are now available for pre-order."

Microsoft's comments back up those of Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, who revealed that pre-orders for PlayStation 4 & Xbox One were "two times" the amount of those for Xbox 360 and PS3 back in July.

Despite the imminent launch, however, Microsoft says that Xbox 360 "continues to maintain its lead in the US console market", where it sold 96,000 hardware units during August 2013.

The figure makes Xbox 360 the best-selling console in the US for the 32nd consecutive month.

Microsoft's domination in the market is thought to be different in the UK, of course, where PlayStation 3 is reported to have outsold Xbox 360 during the course of the summer.

Xbox One launches in the US and UK on November 22.
