Wheelchairs are to be added to Xbox avatars, Microsoft has confirmed.

Images of the wheelchairs were tweeted by Xbox’s director of program management Mike Ybarra yesterday following a call from players to launch a petition asking for their inclusion.

“No petition needed, we hear you,” replied head of Xbox Phil Spencer. “This is something that we’ve already looked at, not far off.”

It isn’t yet clear when exactly they will be introduced to Xbox Live.

As well as showing the first look at wheelchairs, the images also appear to feature more detailed avatars, suggesting an upgrade to the existing system could be on the way, too.

Avatars allow Xbox One and Xbox 360 users to create and customise virtual representations of themselves to attach to their Xbox Live profile.
