Square Enix has entered into a long-term licensing agreement with Epic Games granting them the rights to develop multiple games using Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 and Unreal Engine 4.

Under the terms of the agreement, Square Enix will also be provided with “local support” from Epic Games Japan.

“Epic has a strong relationship with Square Enix, and it’s an honour to provide their creative and technical talent with the best game technology available for licensing,” said Taka Kawasaki, territory manager of Epic Games Japan. “We look forward to supporting their developers with world-class tools for years to come.”

Square Enix has typically used its own proprietary engines to power its games.

Unreal Engine 4 was revealed earlier this year. The next-generation engine incorporates real-time global illumination, removing the need for precomputed lighting. It’s pretty.

As well as entering into an agreement to use Epic’s engine, Square Enix is also developing its own next-gen proprietary engine, Luminous Engine.

Square Enix has yet to announce which of its games will make use of Unreal Engine 4.
