Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase has told VideoGamer.com that there's a chance Square Enix will have some news on a Final Fantasy VII remake at a later time.
Speaking at gamescom last week, Kitase said: "As for a VII remake, all I can advise right now is to play the PSN release that just came out for the time being. Maybe, perhaps we'll have some news for you at a later time."
That's certainly promising. And what will Kitase be up to once work on Final Fantasy XIII is complete?
"I'm actually working on multiple projects right now," said Kitase. "I don't know exactly what new projects I'll be taking on after XIII, but I am working on Agito XIII as well, so maybe I'll be able to focus a little bit more on that project once XIII is complete."
Final Fantasy XIII is scheduled for release later this year in Japan and will arrive elsewhere in 2010.

I would strongly recommend FFVII as a warranted download for you to delve into RPGs for the first time. Being as it's a port of a PSX Classic in the PSN store, it is fairly cheap, so it would provide a good test run (for the money involved) as far as seeing if the game would be something you'd enjoy (and consequentially, the rest of the genre, since this particular game is a good representation of it).
Additionally, FFVII is heralded as such a monumental success not simply because of its sales record, but because of why that sales record exists: This game is a legendary icon in video game history that helped RPGs REALLY make the jump from the Japanese to the international market. Others sold fairly well, but this game's sales were monumental, and it is now regarded as the "basic blueprint for an RPG", so to speak.
I honestly wouldn't recommend trying XII as your first (especially in the Final Fantasy franchise) simply because it's a marker of Square trying to make a significant evolution in the franchise and genre at large. "Learn to walk before you can run", as the saying goes.
If you do happen to enjoy this title (and if it's something you're seriously interested in looking into), give it a good try, and it'll speak for itself.
If you don't, well...10 dollars really isn't all that hard a lump to swallow, so you won't be out a whole lot in the off-chance that it's not your thing.
I WOULD, however, suggest downloading it on your PS3 over the PSP. Not only are PSN downloads through PSPs terrifyingly long (mine took 6 hours to download/install; without a PS3, it was my only option), and if you end up liking it, it will be one of those games you'll have a very hard time putting down.
Hopefully, this will help you make your decision.

If you've got access to X then you should start with it. It wouldn't feel as outdated as VII.
