BioWare has started fanning the flames of the inevitable fanboy wars ahead of Mass Effect 2's 21 January 2011 release on the PS3 - by declaring the game "much more solid on PS3".

Speaking on the BioWare podcast, PS3 producer Jesse Houston details some of the advantages of playing the game on Sony's monolithic black box.

"Being that the PS3 is coming out over a year later, we wanted to make sure that we added a lot of benefit to the people who waited," he said.

"One of the first things you've going to see is improved graphics. We actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and used that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content, the story and all the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine. And that's what we're actually delivering"

BioWare is also adapting their controls to the PS3. "The controls are geared towards the PS3 controller," says Houston, but "you can switch it back to the old-style Xbox controls if you'd like".

Other improvements also include planet scanning, general bug fixes and the entire wodge of DLC - such as the 8/10 Lair of the Shadow Broker - included as standard. The PS3's Blu-ray drive also means "you no longer have to swap discs". Which is nice.

Of course, PS3 owners will never be able to get their hands on Mass Effect 1 - the game was published by Microsoft. But in order to bridge the gap, Houston also explains how BioWare has added "an interactive comic that helps tell the backstory of Mass Effect 1, as well as helps you set the stage for your Mass Effect 2 universe. It helps you make decisions on things like whether or not Wrex lives or dies, or whether Ashley or Kaiden lives or dies" - and these decisions can then be imported into Mass Effect 2, similar to how the save games work on the 360 version of the game.

VideoGamer.com awarded Mass Effect 2 10/10, so PS3 owners will probably be delighted they've not spent just over a year waiting around for nothing.

The PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 is released in Europe on 21 January 2011.

From a PS3 owners perspective, I'd rather have Mass Effect 2 then no Mass Effect at all.

The fact that it will use the Mass Effect 3 engine is a nice little bonus for having to wait one year for it.

I was thinking that - some of the really tough decisions really needed playing out for the full gravity of the effect they would have...

Actually it's a quote; Bioware spoiled it, not VG. Just sayin'

I suppose the interactive comic is to compensate the no Mass Effect 1 for the PS3, but I think Mass Effect should of been released also for the PS3. Why? Well its got good twists and turns and decisions to be made, but then again, VG kind of spoiled that in this article.

It will be interesting to see how ME2 looks on the PS3. I won't be buying it as I already have ME2 on the X360. ME2 story is more mysterious than the first. Really does leave a cliff-hangar in different sub-plots.

Nah, we still have a sense of superiority because PS3 exclusive gamers don't get to play the best game in the series and instead get shafted with a lame comic :D

@Renegade - Why? The PC version is still a year old and I don't recall it being any better than the 360 version other than the usual graphical advantages inherent in PC gaming.

Interesting strategy - potentially piss off the consumers that made the franchise a success... lets see how it works out for them.

It's a real shame - given the size of Bluray discs that it wasn't able to be released with both Mass Effect games on it. As Woffls says - ME2 is only half the story - all be it a great half - but still only half!

I seriously can't wait to play it on the PS3 though!

People that know anything at all about Mass Effect?

It should be the best version of Mass Effect 2 if they've released it a year later. It's great that it's on ME3's engine as well. I doubt I'll buy it, though, because the idea of not having a fully connected Mass Effect game just seems pointless to me.

Who cares about Mass Effect 1. This is awesome. I usually wait until they release a game with all the DLC (Dragon Age) anyway. Combine that with improved graphics and I'm stoked. Playing in bluray is nice. Aside from not having to deal with multidiscs but it's also nice to have a disc that doesn't scratch easy. Anyways... I'm going to play DC Universe Online. (Beta)
