Welcome to the third and final part of our revealing Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix retrospective with lead designer David Sirlin (if you missed them, here's part one and two). Here Sirlin discusses what Street Fighter games might be in line for a future HD Remix, explains the differences between how Xbox LIVE and PSN work out who wins a fight following a disconnect, and details how his Street Fighter 4 would have been better than the one gamers are going to get next year.
VideoGamer.com: What's next in terms of Street Fighter for Capcom? Super Turbo HD Remix has had excellent reviews and is doing well on Xbox LIVE. Has it paved the way for other remakes of other Street Fighter games?
David Sirlin: Well I think so. The biggest road block to that is just money. It's no secret that this project took much longer than Capcom wanted it to. I don't even know the budgets, and if I did I couldn't tell you, I don't even mean as an inside person, I just mean anybody off the street looking at this would say, 'wow, that must have cost a lot, all those people for that long and the art switch...'. So I really have no idea about how much money this is making or how little money it is making. I don't know. I would hope that it would be the number one game, just like Hyper Fighting was the number one game, and it would make tons of money, and in that case I think it would be very likely that we'll see more. But like I said I don't know those financial numbers. I think that's what would drive it. I would recommend, if possible, that first of all there would be patches to fix any problems that come up in this game. I just did a series of tutorial videos for Nintendo. That took months and months. I think that would be great if Street Fighter HD Remix had that, if Capcom wants to hire me to do that like Nintendo did for Smash (Super Smash Bros. Brawl). And then for future games I think the next one in the progression that makes sense is Street Fighter Alpha 2. The game they made right after Super Turbo was Street Fighter Alpha 1 but that's not very good, it has a lot of problems. Alpha 2 is pretty good. I'd like to see that remake.
VideoGamer.com: Is that a game you can see Capcom giving the green light to in terms of a HD Remix?
DS: I don't know. I think it would be pretty hard actually. On the plus side if HD Remix does do so well then it seems like they should do something, and Alpha 2 would be the next one in the series. Another plus would be that I was a really good person to work on this Super Turbo project because I know that game so well, and the other Street Fighter game I know that well is Alpha 2, so I would be able to bring that level of balance to that game as well, whereas it would be harder for Alpha 3 or some other game that I don't know as well. Those are all pluses, but then a minus would be maybe Capcom would think that it's just too many Street Fighters and people can't tell them apart, and does anyone remember Alpha 2 over the other ones? So I don't know. I have no idea. All I can do is hope. And I think that position that I'm in where I have to tell you I have no idea and all I can do is hope is the reason why it would be nice to have my own franchise where I do know. So maybe someday that'll come true.

VideoGamer.com: I remember asking you in our previous interview about the 360 download limit and you mentioned that it was difficult to fit so many 1080p graphics in such a small download size. Now that both versions of the game are out, how do the two versions compare? Are there any differences?
DS: Microsoft changed their download limit from 150MB to 350MB. I wasn't at the meeting where Microsoft made that decision but it appears to me as an observer that they did that because of Street Fighter. I mean I think they did. I know that we made a very strong case that we tried as hard as we could to fit in the 150 and it was just technically infeasible if we wanted to have all the characters be 1080p. So we told them that. We said, 'we really think we should be allowed to go higher so why don't you look at this as a special case?'. And I wasn't involved in any of those negotiations so I've no idea how that went down but the final answer was that Microsoft publicly said we're changing the limit across the board to 350 and that the first game that will take advantage of that is Street Fighter. So as far as HD graphics, it should be identical between PlayStation and Xbox. I don't know if there are super tiny differences in the way that they're shaded or something. There's no intentional difference. It should be the same exact art on both platforms. And features, too. I don't really know of any features that one platform has that the other doesn't, except Achievements on 360.
VideoGamer.com: That was something I wanted to ask you about. There's no Trophies in the PS3 version. What happened there?
DS: There was no such thing as Trophies when we were developing that game. So it was never in the plan.
VideoGamer.com: Could Trophy Support be added in a patch?
DS: I have no idea. We focused on 360 the whole time. My whole world was 360.

the latest situation with PAL region HD remix - It was denied certification by SCEE, and they're going to need to work on it some more, and resubmit. - as of Dec 6th.
I'm not sure if I will get it even if it is released before IV, because, the 360 multiplayer beta has only left PS3 owners with all manner of bugs and inferior netcode, according to hearsay about the US version.
If it turns up hackneyed or incomplete, like the US one sounds as if it is, there's no doubt I will leave it, appreciation of the series, or no. I don't know how that condition is seen as acceptable, to be frank.
If they're stuck on which Street Fighter to re-invigour next, the one that would offer the most value, and for which far better reasoning can be put forward to support the development of, is clearly Street Fighter III - (I personally think they should try to deliver a best-of release of 3, so that people can enjoy the various disciplines of SF all from the one console.
I'm not remotely interested in HD Alpha, as Anthology has me more than covered in that regard.
Darkstalkers would be another cool suggestion for them to look at bringing back in HD, I think.

Sony/Capcom have delayed the European PS3 release of the game, because the U.S version has come up with a fair few problems. It might be a while before that appears on Euro/UK PSN.
