The release date for the first of Microsoft’s Zune MP3 players has been set for November 14 in North America, and will carry a retail price of $249.99, in line with that of Apple’s 30GB iPod.

Just as Apple has its iTunes service, Microsoft will be offering a Zune Marketplace where users will be able to pay for and download music. What’s different, though, is that the Zune Marketplace will use Microsoft points, rather than a real world currency.

Microsoft says that individual tracks will cost 79 points, and furthermore the Microsoft points system for the Zune is the same as that found on Xbox Live Marketplace, something the software giant is calling a “stored value system.

The full extent of the Zune’s compatibility with the Xbox 360 is still very unclear, but it’s not out of the question to think that one day we’ll see Xbox 360 users accessing the Zune Marketplace on their Xbox 360.
