The Register is reporting that despite Microsoft’s recall of the power cable used for their Xbox console, the cause of the problem could be the console itself and not the power cable. It is believed that the Xbox power supply is at fault, with a number of early models being at risk. The power cable simply made the problem worse. The replacement that Microsoft has been sending out acts as a fuse, tripping power to the unit. While this will stop Xbox’s from catching on fire, it wont stop them from breaking down.

Microsoft has no plans to replace early model Xbox’s, with the official site making it quite clear: “Q. Can I return my Xbox for a full refund or a new console? A. No. The replacement power cords are designed to protect you and your Xbox consoles from specific component failures and a potential fire hazard. Outside of this program, replacement or repair of your console for any other reason continues to be subject to the terms and conditions of the warranty.”
