Xbox One has not been designed to support vertical orientation, and doing so could damage the console, Microsoft has warned.
Talking about the upcoming console with GameSpot, Microsoft’s senior director of product management and planning Albert Penello warned, “We don’t support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk.”
The decision to stick to a horizontal design isn’t related to “a cooling problem,” Penello says, but because Microsoft “just didn’t design the drive for vertical. Because it’s a slot loading drive, we just didn’t design it for both”.
Penello’s reasoning for avoiding vertical support seems odd: PlayStation 3 featured a slot loading drive and support for vertical orientation.
Nevertheless, the decision likely won’t affect too many Xbox One users. “We found, interestingly enough, that 80 per cent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally,” Penello adds.
Xbox One launches in the UK on November 22.
