Releasing a successor to the Xbox 360 could play right into Sony’s hands, giving the PlayStation 3 the opportunity to gobble up the hardcore market, M2 Research analyst Billy Pidgeon has said.

“Should Microsoft release a successor to Xbox 360 and shift the pipeline for hardcore games over to the new consoles, that would be a possible scenario by which PS3 could bypass Xbox 360’s active installed base,” Pidgeon told Industry Gamers.

He added: “This scenario would give PS3 the opportunity to soak up the hardcore sector.”

Reports of new consoles from both Microsoft and Sony have pegged release dates any time from next year to 2015.

Back at E3, VideoGamer.com learned that MS is likely to reveal the Xbox 720 at E3 2012.
