Details of the 360 Slim may have leaked before Microsoft’s press conference, but the company managed to retain one surprise – namely the fact that the new console will ship to retailers today in North America.

The revamped console is black and features a thinner, slightly concave design. It also features a hidden removable 250gb hard drive, and in-built 802.11n connectivity – the fastest connection available on a current gen games console. It will also include a digital output S/PDIF, no external power brick and can power Kinect without the need for another power source.

In the US at least, the Slim will retail at the same price as the previous model ($299). In the States, the old Elite 360s will drop down to $249, while the price of Arcade units will fall to $149.

Microsoft’s conference ended with the revelation that every attendee was to receive a free Slim console. This announcement resulted in the biggest cheer of the entire show; the crowd seemed to have less enthusiasm for the lengthy parade of casual Kinect titles, for some reason.

European gamers will have to wait until July 16 to get their hands on the new console. No price has been announced, but the current RRP for an Elite is £199.99.
