Although known about for some time now, the demo at the DVD Forum in LA was the unit’s fist public outing, which gave onlookers a glimpse of what it’s capable of. Collins chose to play a section from The Phantom of the Opera, as well as showing the new navigation features.

Collins didn’t reveal any new information regarding pricing, release date, or the implementation of the add-on, merely stating that it would be one of the cheapest HD-DVD players on the market and that it would arrive in the holiday season. He did add that the audio and video processing would all be handled by the Xbox 360, but did not reveal any plans for any digital video output solutions.

Since the HD-DVD add-on was first announced it has been under a lot of criticism for further diluting the Xbox 360 SKU, although mainly from the corner of the anti MS fanboys. If we take Microsoft on its word, then the external drive will only ever be used for video playback and will not allow for the release of games on the higher capacity HD-DVD format. If this remains true then the add-on could prove a cost effective way of entering the HD movie arena, and will by no means be a required add-on.
