The Financial Times reports that consumers worldwide have purchased nine million Wii consoles, moving ahead of the Xbox 360 which currently stands at 8.9 million units. The Wii has overtaken the Xbox 360 despite giving Microsoft’s console a 12 month head start.

The fact of the matter is that, despite the Xbox’s earlier launch in November 2005, it only sells in two markets – Europe and the US,” commend a Tokyo analyst. “Japan is home turf to Sony and Nintendo, so the Xbox is not a player at all. In contrast, Nintendo has been selling well in all three major markets.

Previous hardware cycles have been dominated by Sony with the PlayStation and then the PlayStation 2, but it has a long way to go if the PlayStation 3 is to repeat its ancestor’s success. The console is currently lagging far behind the competition with only 3.7 million units sold to consumers since its launch on November 11, 2006.
