TIGA, the trade associate representing the UK videogames industry, is making a case for a precise definition of a videogame which it says would be useful ahead of the implementation of games tax relief.

The body has submitted the following definition to the Government:

“A game is interactive entertainment software whose primary purpose is to entertain or educate.”

The definition was created with the intention of being as short and as wide as possible, in addition to being future proof.

“As well as being of general interest, a specific definition of what makes a videogame will have a practical application in so far as games tax relief,” explained Dr Richard Wilson, CEO of TIGA. “It will ensure that tax relief is aimed at the right sector for the benefit of those squarely in the videogame sector.”
