Ubisoft will release a The Smurfs video game for Wii and DS this August to coincide with the debut of Columbia Pictures’ / Sony Pictures Animation’s 3D family comedy The Smurfs.

In the movie the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours – right into the middle of Central Park. The Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

Ubisoft is designing the game to appeal to both new and old fans of The Smurfs. Details of the game aren’t available at this time.

The Smurfs is a movie tie-in and as such – despite what Ubisoft says – is likely to be targeting the young end of the market. We very much doubt Smurfs fans who have since grown up will find much to enjoy from the Wii and DS outings. We’d be more than happy for Ubisoft to prove us wrong though.
