Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Jack Tretton has told Fast Company that he doesn’t think “price makes or kills a platform”.

Tretton’s comments come in the wake of the 3DS launching at a relatively high price point and with Sony’s forthcoming NGP expected to be even more expensive.

“It’s not to say the price of the platform isn’t a consideration, but I don’t think price makes or kills a platform,” Tretton told Fast Company. “Something that’s lousy, that’s very inexpensive, is not going to be successful, and something that’s pricey will ultimately find its audience if there’s enough value there.”

For Tretton the initial cost should be looked at in terms of your overall investment in the platform.

“I think when you’re buying a platform, when you’re buying technology, you’re hopefully buying a device you’re going to enjoy for many, many years,” he added.

“People are used to spending several hundreds of dollars to get a portable device. I think in the long run, when you look at that total investment in a platform, the amount of money you spend on the hardware is a relatively small percentage of the total investment.”

If the NGP does launch at a higher price point than the 3DS, Sony will be hoping that Tretton is right. While smartphones typically cost more than £300 if bought outright, most phones are sold as part of contracts where the cost is spread over the course of 18 or 24 months. The NGP will be bought outright at a cost perhaps topping £250.
